I’m three weeks into my 30 Day Sugar Detox and I’m craving… wine! Yes really! Sometimes after a long day coaching clients, walking the dog, making dinner and taking care of my children there’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with my husband and a nice glass of red wine.
Alcohol is one of my ‘consume moderately’ drinks for the duration of the detox. Tipples such as:
- Brandy
- Champagne
- Dry red wine
- Dry white wine
- Rum
- Sparkling wine
- Tequila
- Vodka
- Whiskey
Are relatively low in sugar and when enjoyed responsibly and provide a welcome break for many of my sugar detoxers. However… I’m looking to shed a few lbs after the excesses of Christmas and in this case I advise my detoxers to steer clear of all alcohol for the full 30 days.
So what can you drink on a detox instead? Because enjoying Poldark with a glass of water just doesn’t sound right…
Last week on my Facebook page I shared my three favourite homemade detoxing drinks in a live video…
Today I’m sharing the recipes for you to download and keep!

Start your day with…
Refreshing Green Smoothie (aka Hulk Juice!)
When it comes to giving yourself an instant hit of hydration and healthy nutrients, a green smoothie really does have it all covered. This one takes just minutes to prepare and by adding a tablespoon of seeds you can tick protein off the list too! A great start to the day and if I claim to be making ‘hulk juice’ then even my children will try it!
Ingredients
- 1 ripe pear
- 1 handful organic kale,
- 1 handful organic spinach
- Squeeze of lemon
- 1 inch of ginger
- Half a cucumber
- 1 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds.
- Water to achieve desired consistency
Place all your ingredients in a blender or NutriBullet. Blitz and drink straight away!
For your afternoon tea break…
Matcha Green Tea
Matcha green tea does still include some caffeine, but it doesn’t tend to give people the blood sugar swings like coffee. It’s also really rich in antioxidants and is thought to help support your metabolism.
Method
Put 1 measure of matcha green tea in a cup (Kerry this is where we need an affiliate link!)
Pour over a 1/3 of a cup of hot water, stir well.
Froth up some oat milk (or heat it if you have no frother), pour over and serve.
And for an evening of relaxation…
Golden Turmeric Milk
This delicious, creamy drink is a real winter warmer and a perfect, healthier substitute for your evening glass of wine or hot chocolate. Turmeric is great for supporting detoxification, reducing inflammation and supporting immune system. And by adding a little sweetness with honey even my children enjoy it!
Ingredients
- 1 cup of oat, almond or Koko milk per person
- Grate in 2 to 3 cm of fresh turmeric, or half teaspoon of ground per person
- Some freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of coconut milk
Method
Place all ingredients in a pan on a low heat and allow to simmer and infuse for about 10 minutes.
Strain and serve with a little raw honey and cold milk if you wish.
