5 super effective hangover cures that work naturally

16th December 2016 By thefamilynutritionexpert

If you’re anything like me then you probably like to indulge in a cheeky tipple during the festive season… but what if one drink turns into two then three?

hangover cures that work naturallyAfter a few too many bevvies at the work’s Christmas party, or a tad too much of the New Year’s Eve champagne, you might be left with some rather terrible side effects; such as a sore head, sickness, dizziness and fatigue.

However, if you fancy having a hangover-free Christmas and New Year this festive season, then here are…

5 super effective hangover cures that work naturally

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, which as well as helping to reduce oxidative stress in the liver (thus relaxing the liver after a heavy night on the town), it may also help to boost your immune system too!

A shot of vitamin C can give you added energy and perk you up quickly the day after the night before! Foods high in vitamin C include:

  • Oranges
  • Red peppers
  • Kale
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries
  • Grapefruit
  • Guava
  • Kiwi
  • Green peppers

  1. B-Vitamins

natural hangover cureYou might have heard of these before, but may not really know what they do and how they support your body!  These super-duper nutrients are essential to help clear alcohol from the body, plus vitamin B1 is claimed to enhance the effects of NAC (N-acetyl cysteine, an amino acid which helps to break down any alcohol in your body) and vitamin B6 may also help to reduce those nasty hangover symptoms!

All-in-all, the B-vitamin family can help to combat that alcohol build up and flush it out of your system to even prevent that next day hangover from kicking in!

Find B-vitamins in shellfish, liver, fish, crab, fortified soy products (tofu, soymilk), fortified cereals, red meat, low fat dairy, cheese, and eggs.

  1. Magnesium

This mineral is usually lacking in most people’s diets, meaning their levels are very low, and to make things even worse alcohol reduces magnesium levels even further!

Also, as it has anti-inflammatory properties, it is also thought to help to reduce the strains of a hangover, therefore your body will thank you for taking a high strength magnesium supplement before you head out for a night on the tiles!

  1. Antioxidants

hangover smoothie juiceWe have all heard of these little things called antioxidants, that are found in brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, especially berries. However, did you now that the key antioxidant nutrients (including C and E, quercetin, Co-enzyme Q 10 and N-acetyl-cysteine) might help to protect you against alcohol’s toxic impact?

A freshly made juice drink, containing apple, carrot, beetroot, and ginger (to stop you feeling sick) will hydrate you and provide your body with a hangover-busting antioxidant hit!

  1. Artichoke

And last, but no means least, artichoke contains substances that are traditionally used to stimulate the flow of bile from the liver, thus helping to reduce the seriousness of your hangover.  This funny looking green vegetable may not be the most appetising of foods after a night on the dance floor, however if it helps prevent sickness and head thumping after a full-on evening of cocktails and dancing then it can’t be all bad!

Remember to drink responsibly over this party season, but if you do have one too many then I hope that these 5 hangover cures will ensure that you don’t suffer from alcohol’s evil effects too severely…

…Happy holidays!
